Timeline 

 

·         1890 : White Settlers arrive in future capital Harare 

 

·         1923 : British Colony/ British Names “Rhodesia”

  

·         1930 : Land Apportionment Act denies blacks from accessing farm land

  

·         1930-1950 : Blacks oppose to the British Government. They start nationalist groups called Zapu and Zanu (Zimbabwe African People's Union) and (Zimbabwe African National Union)

  

·         1953 : Rhodesia becomes part of the Central African Federation (made up of Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi) They combine with Malawi.

 

·         1963 : The Federation breaks up when Zambia and Malawi gain independence/ Ian Smith elected Prime Minister of Rhodesia

  

·         1965 : Smith declares independence under white minority rule, which led to chaos

  

·         1970 : Rhodesia becomes a republic, but is still not free.

  

·         1970’s : The African guerillas fight against the white rule, Zanu and Zapu are still in operation

  

·         1978 : A new leader is now elected, Bishop Abel Muzorewa.

  

·         1980 : Mugabe becomes prime minister and Rhodesia, name is changed to Zimbabwe. They are independent.

  

·         1987 : Mugabe changes the constitution and becomes Executive President

 

·         1990 : Mugabe is reelected 

 

·         1996 : Mugabe wins again, but there was not many voters

  

·         1997 : The economy fell, only beneficiary was Mugabe, and the government

  

·         2000 : Mugabe fails to redistribute land as promised to the Africans, and took white land, 32% of all agricultural land

  

·         2000-Now : Country is still in total chaos with their economic situation
