Why did European colony colonize African countries

Page history last edited by Alex Shukhman 15 years ago

The French had colonized Senegal for many reasons. They thought it was important to claim a stake in Africa. Then, they made Senegal into a trade post, which became available for the colony to buy and trade slaves or other goods in Africa. The French gained profits from selling objects such as watches, compass, lamps, umbrellas, etc. at a higher cost, making Senegal to pay the price with gold, salt, leather, and other expensive objects. The French colony traded slaves the most, because the slaves had a lot of use to the French. The slaves did work such as farm work,  plantation, mining, and acted as a scapegoat when the countries were at war. They had put the slaves on the front line as a shield. During the time when French were making trade posts and selling objects, they spread Christianity among the people of Senegal. Other colonies also spread their religions. The French had used the fact that colonizing is easier if they loosen Senegal's people from each other with Christianity.
